- Lloyd Recruitment Services are pleased to be working with a global manufacturing company who are looking for a Research & Development Director to join their expanding team on a permanent basis.
The R&D Director will be a Global Leadership Senior Management Team Member responsible for the imagination and proof of concept creation for our future pipeline of the company’s technologies. The role is highly technical but requires a commercial mind-set as well as the ability to engage widely with customers, partners, and colleagues, in order to gather and evaluate ideas successfully.
You will work to lead a team of R&D Engineers, in the domains of components, computing hardware, firmware and software, located in two locations in the UK and globally. The role sets out the R&D roadmap and then oversees the proving of concepts, which when tested, are handed over to the product engineering teams to bring to mass market.
Key responsibilities:
Developing and owning the companies R&D Roadmap – with your imagination, access to our global network of customers and colleagues and wide array of technology partnership you will be responsible for developing and securing support for the projects that comprise the R&D roadmap. The R&D roadmap is a set of technologies that we want to develop as part of our portfolio of Intellectual Property within the company. These technologies are developed rapidly through our R&D engineering team to proof-of concept stage to allow us to test the commercial proposition before taking the decision to move to mass market.
Leading the in-house R&D Engineering Team – Delivering the roadmap through a team of diverse engineers from an array of disciplines, bringing this team together around a clear mission and set of common goals while developing each Engineer’s skill and capability.
Developing and managing technology partnerships and 3rd party Engineers – Choosing ‘make vs. buy vs. partner’ to deliver on our roadmap engineering work streams, developing and managing the relationships which bring this to life.
Supporting the transition to mass market – Developing the application to support the business case for mass market production, then once agreed working to transition R&D projects over to the relevant Production Engineering teams.
Project and cost management – Overall responsibility for the project management of the R&D projects and associated budgets.
Qualifications and experience:
Proven history of R&D engineering
Proven track record of engineering team leadership
Demonstrable experience of delivering commercial value from new technology
Engineering or science related degree
Proven ability to manage cross-functional teams without direct reporting relationships
Knowledge and experience:
Development of low-level software for Linux and Windows platforms
Embedded electronics development
Creation of firmware solutions for real-time processing and interconnectivity
Touch display and I/O device knowledge
Broadcast, Scientific and Clinical sector knowledge a plus
Exceptional written, verbal and presentation skills
Experience with MS Project, Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and project management tools
This roles requires regular UK and international travel
Salary £60,000 - £80,000 DOE
